Great News for Blending/Flipping Cohort
This past year AEA PD Online, in conjunction with 5 AEAs (Mississippi Bend, Great Prairie, Heartland, Green Hills and Keystone), helped 49 districts statewide learn more about Blended and Flipped Learning in the Classroom. Some of these districts are making this part of their Professional Development instruction. If you are interested in participating in the Blended/Flipped Learning cohort you can contact your AEA Instructional Technologist or AEA PD Online K-12 Instructional Designers Denise Krefting or Melissa Wicklund.
These cohorts consist of 4 courses that teachers and administrators can take through out a 1 1/2 year period. You will learn more about the pedagogical change teachers and classrooms will go through to offer blended or online opportunities.

On-line Version “Iowa Science Standards: Overview” Now Available
As
of 2015, Iowa has new K-12 science standards and this year marks the
second year of our four-year
implementation process. Are you a new
teacher or new to Iowa and have not yet heard about the new standards?
Were you unable to attend the Iowa Science Standards Overview
Professional Development offered through your AEAs? Did you attend the
Overview PD but want a refresher prior to attending the next round of
professional learning? Did you attend the Overview PD and are now in
charge of sharing the learning with others in your districts? Are you
an instructional coach who needs a foundational understanding of the
science standards?
If you said “yes” to any of those questions, the
science leadership team and AEA PD On-line are pleased to announce that a condensed version of the Iowa Science Standards: Overview is now available on-line.
This overview provides foundational information, helps build a common
vocabulary, and provides a glimpse of the vision for teaching and
learning with the new standards.
The overview may be completed
individually as a self-paced course but is broken into smaller segments
that could be completed within teams/PLCs. In order to help provide a
more complete picture of the number of participants using this resource,
every individual should register even if you are completing the course
as a group.
To register:
1. Go to http://training.aeapdonline. org/
2. Either login or register for a new account
3. Search for science standards
4. Select Iowa's Science Standards: Overview and Register

Teacher LOVES the Student Personalized Learning System
AEA PD Online received this note from Holly Leinhauser, a counselor with North Scott Schools, as she shares how their district is using the Character Skills modules in the Student Personalized Learning System.
"I have at this time enrolled our entire school to utilize those modules [in the Student Personalized Learning System]. Although our BD teacher is using those character skill modules with a few students who need guided direction with the modules and that has lead to meaningful conversation.
Last year I worked one on one with a BD student and he didn't always get here in time during the day for us to complete the character skill modules; however when we were working hard I thought he loved what we were doing.
I would suggest that counselors use the character skills modules in small groups, it is such a nice guide. Perhaps classroom teachers could allow students to work through the modules in groups, completing those independently just wouldn't be beneficial- they are social skills after all.
I love the modules, and we are using EVERFI right now and after students are done with the four modules I have selected we are going to be utilizing those character skills [in the Student Personalized Learning System] modules...
I would recommend these modules to anyone and everyone!
Holly"

OER Science Opportunity
I would like to share an opportunity for your school district, especially, those looking to engage Elementary teachers in online course development. Dan McGuire of the Minnesota Partnership for Collaborative Curriculum asked me to share an opportunity with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade science teachers. The Minnesota Partnership for Collaborative Curriculum is a grassroots initiative to promote the creation of open digital curriculum. The goal is to leverage the power of collaboration and digital resources to launch teachers and students into new learning frontiers.
Dan is looking for elementary teachers who want to incorporate OER (Open Education Resources) lessons into their teaching. He works with the coordinators of the Minnesota Partnership for Collaborative Curriculum (MPCC) curriculum effort in Minnesota, which has some money to pay teachers who would like to help finish the 4th and 5th grade content. Iowa teachers would work on lessons that are similar to Minnesota standards; there’s not a lot of difference. This video is an introduction to the Minnesota Partnership for Collaborative Curriculum.
He is also looking for 3rd grade science teachers to test out the 3rd grade science curriculum.
The teachers who will get paid by the MPCC for creating the first editions of 4th and 5th grade science are the ones who raise their hands first, and jump the very low hurdles that the MPCC has for bringing on writers. The content is platform neutral but, ideally, development will be done with Moodle and in a 1:1 classroom environment or classrooms with regular access to laptops or tablets. Teacher pay is based on the number of lessons or units developed.
Here are slides to the presentation Dan made at the Mn eLearning Summit. Dan will work with you to address the current standards vs NGSS issue. The work Dan has done so far will work for both current standards and NGSS with minimal tweaking. That's the beauty (one of them, anyway) of OER - things can get tweaked, modified, changed as needed.
If you are interested or know of a teacher interested in this opportunity you can contact Dan McGuire directly or you can contact me to help you make the connection with Dan and the MPCC curriculum effort.
